Hotel Review

For the first time in quite a while I have the opportunity to review a hotel stay. Hopefully more opportunities will follow soon!

We visited Hilton Doubletree, on the edge of Southampton, for 2 nights. This was a family break in the summer holiday, with a view to spending some time in the New Forest and exploring a part of the country we haven’t really had an opportunity to visit.

The Hotel

The hotel is located just off of the motorway junction, but is surrounded by a wooded area, which makes it feel like you’re somewhere a little more rural. The location means easy access to Southampton, the New Forest and attractions such as Paulton Park.

There is no swimming pool, which is a shame, however there are fitness facilities and the lobby, bar and restaurant areas are all well presented. The hotel has a large car park, however a car parking charge of £5 per night applies.

The Rooms

We booked two standard rooms for 30,000 points per night. This seemed a good rate, given the number of people booking UK breaks this summer – we had initially considered Hilton Bournemouth, but the points rate was about 150,000 per night! If you need more than one room, it may also be useful to note that you can book confirmed interconnecting rooms at Doubletree Southampton.

We had two rooms at the rear of the building on the 4th floor, which was a good location as we had a view of the woods, rather than the car park. The rooms were a decent size, even where we had a twin room with an extra bed.

Service appeared to be almost back to normal in the restaurant. Pre-booking was required, however the restaurant was relatively busy and standard service and options were in place. There was minor miscommunication between the reception desk and the restaurant, with the desk suggesting dinner was fully booked, only for the restaurant to say that they had lots of availability, but otherwise booking was straightforward.

The breakfast buffet had a decent range of hot and cold options and self-service tea and coffee. In the evening the menu had a good range of options and children ate for free from a children’s buffet, which worked well for us.

It was nice to get back to a hotel stay for leisure purposes. Overall Hilton Doubletree Southampton is well located, well presented and well organised and we’d definitely stay again. Having guaranteed interconnecting rooms is also a big plus for a family stay. A swimming pool would be a great enhancement for a family break, but otherwise I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this hotel.
